Garland Days Are Here Again

GARLAND - Once again, it's a "Family Affair" at the annual Garland days being held Friday, September 11th through Sunday, September 13th. The celebration begins with the Fireman's Chicken Barbecue from 5 to 7 PM on Friday and a pie and ice cream social at the Garland Hall. Irish music will be performed by Mark Kaufman.

Also Friday, a home-brew festival will be held at 201 Campbell Road, Garland. Registration is at 5 PM and judging occurs at 6 PM. Music by Jim Lally will further enliven this event. Finally, from 7 to 9 PM the Abbott Hill Ramblers will be performing.

Saturday starts with the 5-mile road race at 8:20 AM and a parade at 10 AM. The Recreation Field opens at 11 AM. Music will include Old Diamonds, Harold Batchelder and Friends, and Old Country. There will be kids games, a Farmers' Market, local crafters, a Jitterbug pull, and an ATV rodeo. Homemade ice cream from StoneFox Farm will be available and the cook shack, run by Garland Recreation will provide food. William Jenkins will lead a talk on Starting Chickens, and there will be demonstrations on Garland's weather history and snakes and turtles.

The night ends with a 5 PM Grange dinner and a 7 to 9 PM Family Contra Dance at the Garland School, Route 94, Garland. Music will be by The Strauch Sisters with caller Nancy Rosalie. All dances will be taught.

Sunday's activities include a Grange breakfast at 7 AM, a bike race, a family paddle on Garland pond at 9 AM, a horse show at 8:30 AM, African Drumming at noon by the Buie School of Music, a 2 PM Soapbox Derby, 3 PM pig scramble, and a Dead Car Raffle to end the day. Throughout the weekend there will also be hayrides, fire engine rides, and train rides by the Garland Historical Society. The Boy Scouts will act as hosts at the campsite field for all those choosing to camp out for the weekend. The Girls Scouts and 4-H club will also be part of the weekend.

Registration for the road and bike races is at 8 AM and races begin at 8:20 AM. The route consists of a scenic loop course that begins and ends at the Garland Store. For more information on the road race, the bike race, and the family canoe paddle, contact Peter Devine at 717-8395.

Grange Activities For Garland Days
The Garland Grange will hold a public supper on Saturday, September 12th from 5 to 7 PM to coincide with Garland days. All you can eat for $6 for adults, $3 for kids under 12. Menu includes: baked beans, macaroni and cheese, ribs, hot dogs, potato and more. Call 924-6954 for more information. The Garland Grange will hold a public breakfast from 6:30 to 10 AM on Sunday, September 13th. Cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for kids. Annual Home Brew Contest during Garland Days
It's LOTS of fun at Garland Days 2009 "Annual Home Brew Contest".

Come join all the home brewers and beer lovers at the oldest home-brew contest in the state of Maine! If you have brewed up some spirits, enter your libation for braggin' rights.
